Juru bicara Partai Shiv Sena, partai yang memimpin koalisi di Maharashta, Manisha Kayanade mengatakan panjang jalur yang dibangun di Maharashta dirasa terlalu pendek dan tidak memberikan dampak yang signifikan terhadap perekonomian daerah.
Sebagai perbandingan, jalur yang dibangun di Maharashta hanya memiliki panjang 155,7 kilometer sedangkan sebagian besar jalur dibangun di Gujarat yang memiliki panjang 348,1 kilometer. Manisha juga mengatakan pihaknya merasa pemerintah pusat tidak adil dalam proyek ini.
Manager Direktur National High Speed Corporation Limited (NHSCL), perusahaan hasil konsorsium Pemerintah Jepang dan India, Achal Khare mengatakan besar kemungkinan akan terjadi perubahan kebijakan mengenai proyek jalur kereta cepat di Maharashta semenjak berpindahnya kekuasaan dari BJP ke Partai Shiv Sena.
Dirinya bahkan mengatakan jika masalah ini tidak secepatnya terselesaikan, tidak menutup kemungkinan proyek kereta cepat ini akan jadi korban rivalisme kedua partai.
Pemerintah India bekerjasama dengan Pemerintah Jepang melakukan pembangunan jalur kereta cepat Mumbai – Ahmedabad sejauh 508 kilometer. Jalur ini terdiri atas 21 kilometer jalur bawah laut dan sisanya adalah jalur layang. Pembangunan jalur senilai Rp 223 triliun (kurs 2017) ini mayoritas didanai oleh Jepang lewat pinjaman lunak melalui JICA.
Jalur kereta cepat ini ditargetkan rampung pada tahun 2023 dan diharapkan dapat mempersingkat waktu tempuh Gujarat – Ahmedabad dari yang sebelumnya lebih dari 6 jam menjadi hanya 2 jam 7 menit.
