Jalur Layang KA Bandara Kualanamu Resmi Beroperasi
[2/12]. Setelah hampir sekian tahun lamanya menjalani masa konstruksi, akhirnya Jalur Layang KA Bandara Kualanamu mulai beroperasi melayani perjalanan KA. Bersamaan dengan berlakunya GAPEKA 2019, mulai Senin (2/12) sebanyak 50 perjalanan KA Bandara Kualanamu dipindahkan melalui jalur layang.
KA pertama yang melintas di jalur ini adalah KA U2A relasi Medan – Kualanamu pemberangkatan pukul 4:00. Pembangunan jalur layang KA Bandara Kualanamu dimulai pada 2015 dan pembangunan fisiknya dilakukan pada 2016 lalu.
Pembangunan jalur layang dimaksudkan untuk menghilangkan persilangan dan penyusulan pada perjalanan KA Bandara. Selain itu, pembangunan jalur layang dilakukan untuk mengurangi kemacetan lalu lintas di perlintasan akibat banyaknya perjalanan KA Bandara Kualanamu.
Jalur layang ini membentang dari Stasiun Medan hingga Stasiun Bandar Khalipah sepanjang 9,5 kilometer melintasi pusat Kota Medan. Jalur KA Bandara Kualanamu ini bisa dibilang merupakan jalur layang kedua yang beroperasi di Pulau Sumatera setelah Jalur LRT Palembang.
Untuk konstruksi jalurnya sendiri sama seperti Jalur Layang Manggarai – Jakarta Kota yakni menggunakan batu balast, bukan slab track seperti konstruksi jalur MRT ataupun LRT.
Lain halnya dengan pembangunan Jalur Layang Manggarai – Jakarta Kota yang menghilangkan jalur lamanya, jalur lama Medan – Aras Kabu tetap dipertahankan dan dioperasikan untuk KA penumpang dan KA angkutan barang.
