Seringkali ketika tangkup kekuasaan berganti kebijakan yang dikeluarkan oleh pemimpin baru seringkali berganti dan berbeda dari pemimpin lama.
Tak terkecuali di bidang perkeretaapian. Perdana Menteri Malaysia yang baru Mahathir Mohammad berencana akan membatalkan proyek jalur kereta cepat lintas negara Malaysia – Singapura. Hal tersebut disampaikan oleh Mahathir dalam wawancaranya dengan koran Financial Times pada Senin (28/5).
Mahathir mengatakan saat ini tengah memprioritaskan kondisi finansial Malaysia. Dirinya mengatakan untuk menghemat anggaran sejumlah proyek yang dirasa kurang penting akan dihentikan, salah satunya adalah kereta cepat yang menghabiskan biaya RM 110 miliar atau sekitar Rp 2 triliun.
Namun Mahathir juga mengatakan dirinya tak bisa asal membatalkan proyek ini. Pasalnya proyek ini adalah proyek lintas negara antara Malaysia dan Singapura sehingga tidak bisa dibatalkan secara sepihak karena adanya perjanjian antar kedua negara. Mahathir menambahkan pihaknya akan berkoordinasi dengan pihak Singapura supaya bisa membatalkan proyek ini.
Selain itu Mahathir juga akan melakukan negosiasi dengan Pemerintah Tiongkok selaku pemberi pinjaman. Namun dirinya juga tak menutup kemungkinan untuk proyek kereta cepat ini tetap dikerjakan asalkan dapat mengurangi dana yang harus dikeluarkan oleh Pemerintah Malaysia.
Perjanjian proyek kereta cepat lintas negara ini ditandatangani pada Desember 2016 lalu oleh perdana menteri Malaysia sebelumnya Najib Razak. Proyek kereta cepat ini rencanannya akan melintasi tujuh stasiun yakni Bandar Malaysia, Seremban, Ayer Keroh, Muar, Batu Pahat, Iskandar Puteri, lalu menyeberang ke Singapura dan berakhir di Jurong East sejauh 350 kilometer.
Rencananya proyek ini akan selesai pada 2026 mendatang dan setelah jadi diharapkan dapat memangkas waktu tempuh dari Kuala Lumpur ke Singapura yang sebelumnya 4 jam menjadi hanya 90 menit saja.
