Lokomotif buatan Fuji Heavy Industry pada tahun 1974 ini didatangkan pertama kali ke Indonesia pada tahun 2006 bersamaan dengan kedatangan KRL Tokyo Metro 5000 dan Toyo Rapid 1000. Sebelum lokomotif ini tiba di Indonesia, lokomotif ini biasa dipakai berdinas langsiran di Pelabuhan Kanagawa Rinkai untuk melangsir kereta barang dan kereta-kereta yang hendak dijagal di pusat scrapping.
Warna asli lokomotif ini sebelum tiba di Indonesia sebenarnya adalah warna biru dengan stripping putih. Namun ketika dia tiba di Indonesia, dia di re-paint menjadi kuning karena lokomotif ini merupakan aset dari Dirjen Perkeretaapian. Hal ini untuk membedakan kepemilikan lokomotif ini dari milik PT KAI yang pada saat itu berlivery putih dengan strip biru tua-biru langit.

Lokomotif ini didatangkan ke Indonesia dengan ekspetasi untuk mengangkut material pembangunan jalur ganda Pantura dan Tegal-Prupuk. Namun karena biaya operasional lokomotif ini sangat besar dan cowcatcher lokomotif ini sering menyerempet peron, akhirnya lokomotif ini hanya diparkir di halaman Gudang Dirjenka Jatibarang bersama sebuah TMC.
Wajar saja apabila biaya operasional lokomotif ini membengkak. Pasalnya lokomotif ini menggunakan 2 mesin yang terdapat di bagian depan dan bagian belakang kereta, otomatis penggunaan HSD bisa mencapai 2 kali lipat dibandingkan lokomotif sejenis yang ada di Indonesia.
Selain itu, lokomotif ini sering menyerempet peron karena cowcatchernya sendiri memang tidak dirancang untuk peron rendah. Bentuknya persegi panjang murni dari Jepang tanpa lekukan untuk menghindari peron rendah seperti lokomotif-lokomotif di Indonesia. Disimpannya lokomotif ini di dalam gudang membuatnya sulit diakses oleh para railfans yang menjadikannya lebih misterius dari sebelumnya.
DD5512 terparkir selama bertahun-tahun akibat tak dioperasikan. Lokomotif ini tak pernah beroperasi jauh-jauh dari gudang. Sampai akhirnya pada 2015 lalu DD5512 dibawa ke Balai Yasa Mekanik Cirebon Prujakan sebelum akhirnya dibawa ke Museum Ambarawa.
Lokomotif ini terbilang unik karena dia hanya memiliki meja kendali tunggal yang ada di sebelah kanan kereta. Selain itu, semua tuas rem dan reverser lokomotif ini dapat dilepas, seperti lokomotif Jepang pada umumnya. Tuas pengendalinya pun cukup simpel dan mirip seperti tuas pengendali di KRL.
Selain itu karena lokomotif ini lahir pada tahun 1974, maka lokomotif ini pernah merasakan era Japan National Railway atau JNR sebelum diswastanisasi menjadi Japan Railway atau JR pada tahun 1987.
